Entertaiment is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of activities. These include the performing arts, such as theater, dance and music concerts; visual arts, including films, television and video games; and sports. Entertainment also includes amusements, such as jokes, laughter and pranks, but it may also be serious in intent, as with ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals or political satire. The word entertainment derives from the medieval Latin intertenere, combining the prefix “inter” with the suffix “tenere,” which in turn comes from the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or extend. Unlike many of the other arts, entertainment has demonstrated a remarkable ability to cross over various media.
