Daily News is the leading New York City newspaper. Its award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers deliver national and local news with a New York perspective. Its exclusives, politics and the latest in sports, gossip and entertainment are second to none. From the heart of the Big Apple, no one covers the Yankees, Mets and Giants like Daily News.
Founded in 1919, the paper was the first to be printed in tabloid format and reached its peak circulation in 1947, at 2.4 million daily copies. Today, it is the eleventh highest-circulated newspaper in the United States. Its iconic art deco headquarters, the Daily News Building, is located in Manhattan’s Times Square neighborhood.
Its subject matter was rich in the Roaring Twenties, ranging from political wrongdoing to social intrigue (such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that ultimately led to the abdication). The newspaper also became an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and employed a large staff of photographers. Its brassy, pictorial style helped the Daily News become a leader among American newspapers, proclaimed Time magazine in 1943.
By the 1980s, the Daily News had begun to experience financial difficulties. In response, its parent company, the Tribune Company, offered it for sale. While the Daily News did not accept any offers, it was unable to close because of the high cost of severance pay and pensions for its employees. It was then that the Daily News decided to strike a deal with newspaper magnate Mort Zuckerman for $36 million. Zuckerman was able to acquire the Daily News due to contracts that he had already successfully negotiated with nine of its ten unions.
After a few years of relative stability, the Daily News began to shift its position away from being firmly Republican. In 1975, the Daily News rolled out what would become its most famous headline in its then-56-year history. After President Gerald Ford vetoed a bankruptcy bailout for the city, the front page read: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.” Ford would later identify this as contributing to his 1976 loss to Jimmy Carter.
In 2017, the Daily News experienced a significant drop in its circulation. This prompted the paper to revert back to its roots and focus on more scandalous and titillating topics, including a series of headlines depicting Ted Cruz giving his middle finger to the Statue of Liberty and rehashing its most famous headline from 1975: “TRUMP TO WORLD: DROP DEAD.” In 2018, with circulation halving over the previous year, the newspaper was sold to Tronc for a staggering $1.
